Tips for a Sparkling Smile to Make the Season Bright!

The holidays are here, and with it, the urge to splurge. When sweets seem to appear around every corner, how can you keep the little ones from loading up on their favorite cookies and candies?Your goal as a parent is to keep their little one healthy every month of the year, no doubt, but it can be a bit of a challenge during the holidays, especially. Even though your hours may be spent frantically fitting in tasks like writing cards and wrapping presents, you can keep our tips in mind for keeping your kids’ teeth healthy this holiday season and beyond.
  • Have a routine: All year long, it’s important to make sure your children brush their teeth twice a day for two minutes at a time. Part of this routine should be flossing, as well, because it can fight off tooth decay and gum disease.
  • Water should be the #1 beverage: Hot chocolate and sparkling cider may appeal to your kids more than water, but water cleanses the mouth and helps with saliva production to deposit essential minerals in the mouth that help build tooth enamel. It also helps wash away food particles, especially sugar.
  • Give the gift of dental health: Maybe your son would rather have a cool toy like Baby Yoda plushie rather than a toothbrush, so mix it up and add a fun kid’s toothbrush to his stocking stuffers, instead.
  • Don’t be on the “naughty” list! Teach your children to stop sucking on their thumbs, as this can interfere with how their permanent teeth grow.
  • Kick off 2020 right: Make dental hygiene goals for the upcoming year, whether that includes twice-yearly dental checkups/cleanings for your kids, letting go of their pacifier or baby bottle by the appropriate age, or curbing their sweet tooth.

Schedule Your Child’s Dental Checkup with Adventure Dental and Orthodontics

Our dentists know this is a tricky time of year to keep little teeth healthy, but it will pay off in the end if you have a routine and some rules in place. It’s OK if they eat sweet treats once in a while, just remember they should drink plenty of water afterward, because sugar latches on the teeth and can cause cavities.
