At Adventure Dental and Orthodontics, we strive to educate our patients on how best to prevent cavities with sealants and at-home hygiene. As pediatric dentists, we believe children should learn how to properly care for their teeth so that they make it into adolescence and adulthood with a bright and healthy smile. In fact, we even celebrate our patients who make it into our no-cavity club! We’re well aware that visiting a dentist’s office can feel intimidating for a child, so our team is dedicated to making each visit as comfortable and customized as possible.
Even for patients who have great home hygiene habits and come in regularly for cleanings, teeth can still get cavities.
At Adventure Dental and Orthodontics, our first goal is to prevent these cavities from occurring. One of the best ways to do this is through the use of dental sealants. Sealants cover the natural pits and grooves in the chewing surfaces of teeth, which can trap debris that cannot be easily removed. Un-sealed teeth are three times more likely to develop a cavity than sealed teeth.
When cavities do develop in a child’s teeth, the most important thing is to treat them early. Cavities in baby teeth grow more quickly than in adult teeth. When treated early, we can simply remove the decay and place composite (white filling) material. These fillings bond to the teeth, creating a tight seal against future cavities, and they blend in with the natural tooth color.
